The Side Effects of Acne Medicine

Even though many treatments for acne are available over the counter, they're still medications, and medications carry with them some sort of side effects. You might not experience any negative effects, but it's important to understand the potential risks when using a new acne medication.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a very popular acne treatment available over the counter and by prescription in a variety of strengths. While it's effective in absorbing excess oil and killing acne bacteria, it can also seriously dry out your skin and cause redness, itchiness and even rashes in severe cases.

Imidazolidinyl Urea

Some acne medications contain Imidazolidinyl Urea, which can cause contact dermatitis, or a skin allergy. The irritation might be mild or as severe as increased acne and redness.

Salicylic Acid

Some acne medications like salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, which means if you don't wear sunscreen, you're more likely to burn. Getting a sunburn can further irritate your skin and cause additional acne.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are sometimes used to treat acne bacteria, but when taken orally, they can cause stomach upset due to a killing off of good stomach bacteria. Antibiotic resistance when used for a great length of time can also result.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin is sometimes prescribed for severe acne. A common brand name for this drug is Accutane, and while it's effective in drying up acne, it can cause birth defects, liver damage, and less severely, increased skin dryness.
