CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) is a substance naturally produced by the human body that facilitates the production of energy in cells. There is some evidence that CoQ10 decreases as we age, and low levels are associated with certain cancers, heart conditions, diabetes and other disorders. While more research is needed to establish the true health benefits of CoQ10 supplements, they are nonetheless often recommended for those with certain health conditions. Like any manufactured supplement, CoQ10 may cause side effects in certain people.
General Side Effects
While CoQ10 supplements are generally well-tolerated, they may cause some side effects. These symptoms are usually mildly bothersome and stop without any medical intervention or treatment. Side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, upper chest or throat discomfort, stomach upset or indigestion, diarrhea, heartburn and loss of appetite. Itching or skin rash, dizziness, insomnia, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, irritability and increased light sensitivity of the eyes may also occur.
Serious Side Effects
Although rare, some serious side effects have been observed in those taking CoQ10 supplements. CoQ10 may cause decreases in blood pressure. If blood pressure becomes too low (hypotension), dizziness and fainting can occur. CoQ10 may also have negative effects on liver enzyme function. There are rare reports of elevated liver enzymes and reduced liver function among people taking the supplement, although more research is needed to confirm these findings.
There are reports of rare occurrences of lowered platelet count among those taking CoQ10. Platelets are components that help the blood clot. As the number of platelets in the blood decreases, the risk of bruising and bleeding increases. Those with bleeding disorders are advised to exercise caution and consult with their physician regarding possible dosing adjustments.
According to the Mayo Clinic, one study to date has reported altered thyroid hormone levels as a result of supplementation with CoQ10.
Although the role and action of CoQ10 in these findings is not yet clear, lack of oxygen and blood flow has also been observed during intense exercise in those taking the supplement. Vigorous exercise is generally discouraged in those taking CoQ10.
Men taking CoQ10 are also advised that it may affect sperm. Due to lack of evidence regarding its safety, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take the supplement.
Allergic Reaction
CoQ10 may cause an allergic reaction in some individuals. Itching and skin rashes have been reported. Theoretically, more serious allergic reactions may also occur, including symptoms such as an unexplained rash all over the body; hives; swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue or throat; problems swallowing; wheezing and problems breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue use of CoQ10 immediately and seek prompt medical treatment.
