Homemade Nail Biting Treatment

Whether it's a nervous habit or learned behavior, nail biting is not only bad for your nails, but your fingers and teeth as well. Nail biting can also lead to lowered self-esteem, as it can make your fingers look swollen and make you embarrassed to show your hands to people. People with this affliction often don't even think about it while they're doing it, as it simply becomes second nature. A conscious effort will need to be taken to remedy this common problem.

Step 1

Keep your nails trimmed. If there's nothing to bite on, you'll be less apt to try it. As soon as you see your nails starting to grow to a length that they can be chewed on, use a pair of nail clippers to cut them back down again.

Step 2

Carry a nail file around with you and have it handy at all times. When you find yourself going to bite, pull out the nail file instead. This will help to keep your hands busy.

Step 3

Polish your nails and make a conscious effort to make them look nice. If you can visibly see them looking better, you may think twice before chewing on them.

Step 4

Get a professional manicure. Chewing on acrylic nails isn't the same. This will help to protect you real nails underneath as well as curb your instinct to bite them.

Step 5

Keep a log of all the times you bite your nails throughout the day. This will make you aware of how often it's happening and help you set goals to lower that number.
