How to Set & Reach Goals

Setting goals can help give direction, whether it's for an individual or a corporation. Individuals can use personal goals to help them achieve their life dreams. Instead of merely dreaming about a desired outcome, you can set goals on the way to achieving financial, career or personal success. Of course, after setting goals, you also have to work to reach them.

Step 1

Identify what you want to achieve. You do not need to be specific. For example, knowing you want to achieve financial success will help you to identify specific goals in the next step.

Step 2

Determine what specific things you need in order gain what you want to achieve. For example, you may decide that you need $100,000 in the bank. If it's a more personal desire, such as being in a committed relationship, you may decide that exchanging friendship rings is the specific thing that will give you a sense of achievement.

Step 3

Write down specific, realistic goals that are measurable and that will help you to achieve your end goal. You may decide that you wish to save a certain amount of money per month, for example, or date at least two different people while searching for your soul mate.

Step 4

Develop a checklist schedule that you revisit periodically. Your checklist should show your specific intermediate goals.

Step 5

Set aside periods of time on a weekly basis to work on achieving your goals. By doing so, you'll help yourself in gaining the goals you have set.

Step 6

Get help from family members or friends. By making your goals a group effort, you have more people working with you and more support, which can help you to achieve each goal.

Step 7

Keep going. If you suffer any setbacks, shrug them off and continue to work toward achieving your goals.

Tips and Warnings

  • For your scheduled checklist, post it in an easily visible location, such as the refrigerator door, so you'll see them often.
  • You may need to adjust your goals if they become unattainable or unrealistic as your situation changes.
