Foods to Erase Wrinkles

"Wrinkles are optional," according to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, author of "The Wrinkle Cure." That statement may seem outlandish and pretentious to many women, but Dr. Perricone and many others contend that you can prevent and erase wrinkles simply by eating the right foods. Though many women and some men spend thousands of dollars on anti-wrinkle creams and invasive cosmetic procedures, the answer to erasing wrinkles might be less expensive, easier and closer to home than they think.

Fish

According to The Washington Post, Dr. Perricone and some other physicians recommend eating fish often, especially oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel, to erase wrinkles. Perricone says that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish have anti-inflammatory qualities that make your skin look better overall and reduce wrinkles. He recommends eating fish up to three times a week to maximize this benefit. Most fish also contain the mineral copper, which can boost skin's elastin, making it look fuller and smoother.

Olive Oil

The American Chronicle sites a Journal of American College of Nutrition study, which showed that people worldwide whose diets include olive oil have fewer wrinkles than those that do not eat olive oil. Dr. Perricone also recommends adding olive oil to your diet, because it is full of vitamin E, an antioxidant. Vitamin E reduces scarring on the skin and protects the skin from some of the damage done by free radicals. A diet rich in olive oil leads to an overall smoother completion.

Walnuts

Walnuts and many other nuts are good wrinkle erasers. This is because nuts are rich in copper. According to The American Chronicle, copper helps boost the growth of skin's elastin, an essential element of the skin that provides elasticity and stretchiness. Without elastin, skin becomes saggy and wrinkled. The more elastin your body produces, by eating foods such as walnuts, the less wrinkled and saggy your skin will be.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is most often used as a sugar substitute for diabetics and people watching their weight. The American Chronicle notes that while xylitol is most often added to foods to enhance their flavor or used as a sweetener in drinks and foods, it is also found naturally in some fruits. The American Chronicle stated that researchers who gave rats xylitol found that the rats produced more collagen. This same effect might occur in humans. Collagen increases the thickness of skin, so that wrinkles are erased. You can buy xylitol in sweetener packets and use them in coffee or tea instead of sugar.

Spinach

Valori Trelor, author of "The Clear Skin Diet," told Self Magazine that leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, are rich in beta carotene. Beta carotene is converted into vitamin A in the body, and this important vitamin promotes cell renewal and turnover so that the skin cells look smooth and do not wrinkle. Spinach is also rich in the antioxidant vitamin C, which acts as an anti-inflammatory for the skin and protects the skin from free radical damage that shows up as wrinkles.
