When acne breaks out, it can leave behind discolored areas of skin that can be difficult to eliminate. These small acne scars are often more firm than the skin surrounding them, and can remain on the face for weeks, if not months, after the acne pustules or cysts have cleared. In order to eliminate acne scars more quickly, the skin must undergo a series of treatments that will loosen the scarred skin, scrub away the loosened skin cells and rebuild new skin underneath that will allow the face to become more balanced looking.
Step 1
Loosen scarred skin cells by applying an oil facial steam. Pour 2 tbsp. of castor oil into the palms of your hands, and rub your hands together to distribute the oil evenly. Spread the oil onto your skin using rhythmic motions. After a minute, use the fingers to deeply massage the oil into the skin, focusing on the areas that are the most effected by small acne scars. After two more minutes, fill a bowl with water that is almost boiling. Lean 18 inches over the bowl and cover the head with a towel. Let the steam from the water envelope the skin for five minutes, then use a damp washcloth to wipe the oil away. Repeat up to three times per week to loosen scarred tissues.
Step 2
Scrub away scarred skin cells by applying a mildly abrasive facial exfoliant. Pour 2 tbsp. of baking soda into a bowl and drizzle 1 tbsp. of water onto it. Massage the baking soda paste that is formed onto the skin using a moderate pressure. After two minutes, rinse the skin thoroughly with water. A baking soda facial scrub can be used three times per week to remove dead and discolored skin.
Step 3
Rebuild new skin cells by applying a facial compress that is high in vitamin C. Place 6 cotton pads into a bowl, then pour lemon juice onto the pads until they are submerged. Lift the lemon juice-soaked cotton pads out of the bowl and use the fingers to gently squeeze out the bulk of the juice. Place the pads onto the skin and press them on gently to make sure that the juice is touching the skin. Allow the pads to remain on the skin for at least 10 minutes, then remove them from the face to let the skin dry. Lemon juice can be used on the skin up to three times per day to encourage the skin to develop new skin cells.
