6 Ways to Relieve a Stuffy Nose
1. Over-the-Counter Solutions
The most commonly used combatant in fighting a stuffy nose is over-the-counter cold and allergy medicines. Before taking medicine, you must first determine the cause of the congestion, whether it is a cold or allergic reaction. If it is a cold, you will display other cold symptoms like a sore throat, itchy eyes or cough. Be very careful in taking medicines, especially for children. Babies and toddlers should never take cold medicine.
2. Nasal Sprays
Using nasal sprays and saline solutions are a much safer and gentler way to relieve a stuffy nose. Saline solutions are especially good for children and babies. Do not use a nasal spray more than a few times a day though. A saline solution nasal spray will break up the mucus so that is can be blown out into a tissue or suctioned out for babies and small children.
3. Steam It Out
Steam is a gentle and very safe way to fight congestion. Like a nasal spray, it will loosen up the mucus and make it easier to remove. For spells of congestion that last a while, like during allergy season, it is wise to invest in a humidifier and run it every night. Another solution is to boil water and drape a towel over your head to trap in the steam, taking deep breaths. It is not safe to steam a child's nose with boiling water.
4. Drown It
Drink a lot of fluids to stay well hydrated. Keeping enough fluids in your body will help fight off the illness that is causing congestion. Hot fluids especially will help break down the mucus so that it can drain. Drink plenty of water and juice. Get hot fluids by drinking tea or apple cider and by eating plenty of soups like chicken noodle.
5. Eat to Fight Congestion
Get important nutrients to help fight off illness and break down mucus build-up. Cut back on wheat and dairy foods while increasing your intake of zinc and vitamin C. Find these valuable nutrients in oranges, strawberries and spinach. Get vitamin C drops which are similar to cough drops.
