There are many different products on the market that claim to clear up acne breakouts, and it can be confusing trying to figure out which ones will actually work. In order to fully clear the face, it is important to use larger amounts of certain acne-fighting products that are lower in concentration. This will work to keep the skin free of pimples, without irritating or inflaming the skin.
Soaps for Sensitive Skin
Most standard facial soaps contain chemical ingredients that can irritate the skin, and can exacerbate acne breakouts. When cleansing acne-prone skin, it is important to use a soap that is formulated for sensitive skin types. Skin that is acne-prone is more inflamed and sensitive than normal, and should be treated in the same way as someone with a sensitive skin type. Scrubbing should be avoided, which can cause irritation. The skin should be cleansed as gently as possible. All that is needed is to lather the skin well, then rinse the lather off with water twice per day.
Benzoyl Peroxide Cream, 2.5 percent
Benzoyl peroxide cream is one of the most powerful acne-fighting products available on the market. Benzoyl peroxide will not only dry up existing acne, but will prevent new acne breakouts from forming under the skin. There are many different strengths of benzoyl peroxide creams, including 2.5 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent. It is important to only use the 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream so that the skin will become clear without becoming irritated or inflamed. Using a benzoyl peroxide cream that is too high can lead to redness, itching and can even cause a mild chemical burn on the skin. A pea-sized amount of the 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream should be smoothed onto the skin twice per day until it has been absorbed.
Oil-Free Moisturizer
Many people neglect using a moisturizer for fear that it will clog the pores. However, using an oil-free moisturizer keeps the skin properly hydrated without clogging the pores with comedogenic oils or additives. It is always important to apply an oil-free moisturizer after using benzoyl peroxide, even in the lowest strength, as it can be overly drying to the skin. A dime-sized amount of an oil-free moisturizer should be spread onto the skin and gently massaged in until it has been absorbed. Use the moisturizer twice per day after using benzoyl peroxide to keep the skin clear and soft.
