How to Cure Puffy Eyelids

Puffy eyelids are the result of swelling or inflammation from a number of irritants. The Mayo Clinic suggests that aging can cause the tissues around the eyes to weaken, which allows normal fat to migrate forward into the lower eyelids, causing them to look puffy. Fluid can also gather in the tissues near the eyelids, causing them to appear swollen. These issues are mostly cosmetic and not a serious concern. Curing the puffiness requires the avoidance of the cause of the swelling as well as treatment to reduce the swelling.

Step 1

Run cold water over a wash cloth or wrap ice cubes in the cloth. Place the cloth on your closed eyes until it becomes warm or is no longer cool to the touch. Get the wash cloth cold again with water or ice and put it over the eyes. Continue doing this three to four times. The puffiness should improve after several treatments.

Step 2

Dunk a tea bag in a glass of warm water. Only place the tea bag on your eye after it has cooled. Wrap it in a tissue to prevent staining of the skin. The tannin in the tea may help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness, explains MotherNature.com.

Step 3

Chill a cucumber in the refrigerator. Slice the cucumber into a few thin rings. Place them over your eyes until they are no longer cool.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid salt and alcohol to reduce swelling. Elevate your head while sleeping. Avoid rubbing your eyes. Take an antihistamine to reduce allergy symptoms if this is what is causing your eye puffiness.
  • Visit your doctor if the eyes swell beyond twice their normal size or the swelling does not diminish after several hours.
