Deconamine SR is a medication used to manage the manifestations of allergies and the common cold. According to Drugs.com, Deconamine is a combination of the medications pseudoephedrine and chlorpheniramine. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant medication that constricts the blood vessels in the nose, while chlorpheniramine is an antihistamines that reduces the amount of histamine the body makes. The combination of these drugs decreases the symptoms of itchy eyes, runny nose, itching and hives. According to the Mayo Clinic, Deconamine is available as a liquid or tablet that should be taken as your physician instructs.
Common Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, Deconamine can typically cause dizziness, sleepiness, dry mouth, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and constipation. It can cause blurry vision, nausea, restlessness, euphoria, skin rash or memory problems. Tell your doctor if these symptoms do not stop after about three days. Your physician may change your dose of Deconamine.
Serious Side Effects
The Mayo Clinic says that the antihistamine and decongestant combination of Deconamine may lead to such rare but serious side effects as blood in the urine, bleeding gums, high blood pressure, melena (black stools), and a fever or sore throat. It may also cause weight gain or diaphoresis (sweating). Drugs.com indicates that Deconamine SR can affect the psyche and cause hallucinations, confusion, strange thoughts or behaviors, anxiety, restlessness and nervousness. It may also cause easy bleeding or bruising, fever, chills and decreased urination. Bleeding or bruising easily is typically the result of low platelet levels. Platelets are necessary for blood clot formation. Call your physician at the first sign of these effects.
