Acne Products for Mature Skin

Acne is troubling at any point in life, but it can be especially trying as an adult. As your skin matures and you develop fine lines, treating acne is no longer as simple as slathering on some benzoyl peroxide and heading out the door. You will need to take care of acne in a new way, but you can get rid of the acne without further drying your skin.

Topical and Oral Antibiotics

Antibiotics can be effective in killing the bacteria that causes acne and eliminating the inflammation and irritation that results from breakouts. A topical antibiotic cream is often prescribed to treat the affected area. However, in severe cases, an oral antibiotic may be prescribed to kill off the entire population of bacteria. Oral antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance when used too frequently and can also cause inflammation in the gut.

Oral Contraceptives

Oral contraceptives are helpful for adult women with acne because they can regulate your hormones. Rapid hormone fluctuations can cause severe acne breakouts in some women. Brands like Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo and Yaz are very low dose pills, and can reduce breakouts. However, oral contraceptives carry serious side effects, so talk to your doctor to make sure this is the appropriate acne treatment option for you.

Sulfur

Some over-the-counter topical treatments for acne are suitable for mature skin. Sulfur, for example, is very mild yet can help to dry up acne lesions without drying out your skin. The only real drawback of this kind of treatment is the smell--sulfur produces a foul odor that some might not want near their faces.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is used in many acne treatments for teens and adults, but it can be found in gentler formulations. Salicylic acid helps your skin slough off dead skin cells more quickly, which can be a contributing factor for acne in older people. Typical side effects include dry skin, redness and flaking, but this can be avoided by using a good oil-free moisturizer.
