1. Keep the Rays at Bay
When trying to decide what to wear for summer walking, the first thing you should put on your body is a quality sunscreen. If you spend more than an hour walking outside, even on overcast days, be sure to use a sunblock with 45 SPF or higher, covering all exposed skin, including the scalp, ears and backs of the legs, arms and neck. Remember, lips burn too, to use a lip product with at least SPF 15. Protect your eyes as well, with a pair of UV sunglasses. To further prevent sunburn while walking, try a large floppy hat, which is as fashionable as it is functional.
2. Dress Light on Top
When you dress for summer walking, you want to be cool; however, you also want to protect yourself from the sun as well as possible insect bites. If you are daring, choose tank-tops or even sport a sports bra; however, for the best protection possible, select long-sleeved, light-colored tops which will save your from the sun as well as bugs. Light-weight cotton fabric are best, and should be loose fitting unless your going with the bare minimum and only wearing a sports bra.
3. Dressing Your Bottom
If you might experience a bit of chaffing on the inner thighs, particularly in hot weather, consider wearing a tight pair of cotton bike shorts under your pants or shorts to keep comfortable and protect your skin. Again, light-weight long pants are best for protection from the sun and nibbling critters, but keep cool when walking in hot weather by going with a pair of shorts, or even wearing a skirt with bike shorts underneath. Thick, soft socks are your best friend when walking in hot weather as they absorb moisture and help to prevent blisters. Finally, feet tend to swell when walking long distances, particularly in the heat, so consider buying shoes which are one half to one size larger than you normally wear, keeping your feet comfortable and blister-free.
4. Be Cool
Neck coolers are a great modern invention. These simple neck wraps are filled with a special type of crystal gel which can be soaked in cold water to keep your neck cool for about 30 minutes while walking in the sunshine. In addition to keeping your temperature at a comfortable level, they also increase blood flow to your head, helping to prevent heatstroke.
5. An Extra Touch
Another way to make your summer walk a bit more comfortable is to purchase a water bottle belt which can conveniently carry a cool bottle of water at your hip. Try freezing the water before you go to keep it icy fresh. Additionally, chewing gum as you walk helps to stimulate saliva and prevent dry mouth, a common discomfort when walking in the heat.
