3 Ways to Use the Withdrawal Method for Birth Control
1. Withdrawal Isn't as Effective as Abstinence
The withdrawal method of birth control involves removing the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation. This method isn't very effective in preventing pregnancy because males often forget to pull out before they orgasm or they can misjudge their timing. The key to using withdrawal effectively is to prevent any sperm from coming into contact with any part of the vagina, including the vulva, or outside of the vagina and the inner leg area. Sperm can travel far. Even when deposited on the outside of the vagina, they can reach and fertilize the female's egg, resulting in a pregnancy. The only certain way to prevent pregnancy is by not having sex at all.
2. Withdrawal Can't Prevent STDs
Withdrawing the penis before ejaculation is ineffective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Pre-ejaculate lubricates the path that the sperm later travel on the way out of the penis. This lubricating fluid carries no sperm, but it can carry any sexually transmitted diseases afflicting the male. Pre-ejaculate exits the body before the male ejaculates, so it can enter the female without her even knowing about it. HIV, AIDS or any other sexually transmitted disease can pass from the male to the female without passing sperm. Using condoms along with the withdrawal method can prevent spreading STDs.
3. Pregnancy is Still a Risk
Pregnancy is still possible using the withdrawal method because sperm can survive in the folds of the penis from prior ejaculations and enter the vagina during a later deposit. Men can cut down on the risk of pregnancy simply by urinating before participating in sexual activity. This helps to flush any remaining semen from the penis before it can pass to the female in the pre-ejaculate. Withdrawal tends to be less effective with teens who are inexperienced and less self-aware. When trying withdrawal as a new form of birth control, partners should also employ another form of birth control until the withdrawal method becomes more comfortable and reliable for both partners. Communication is key for withdrawal to work. Both partners should feel comfortable talking about this birth control method and letting each other know about any apprehension each feels. Unease with withdrawal can detract from the pleasure of the sexual interlude.
