From an anatomical standpoint, hair is necessary for protection against the elements and it also keeps the skull warm. When balding takes place, this is generally due to heredity and it is coined as male- or female-pattern baldness. If you think you might fall into the group of people who suffer from this non life-threatening condition, there are several ways you can detect it.
Step 1
Take a look at the heads of your relatives. Balding can be acquired from your father, uncle or grandfather. If they are balding, then might can be as well.
Step 2
Investigate your comb or brush for hair. Clean out your brush completely and then look at it the next time you brush your hair. If there are large amounts of hair left behind, then you might be balding.
Step 3
Sort through your clothes and areas where you spend a lot of time. Look for hair that has fallen out. Check your car seat, chairs that you sit in often and look on your pillow in your bed.
Step 4
Look in the drain of the sink and bathtub. If you are balding, there may be clumps of hair.
Step 5
Use a small hand-held mirror to scope out the top of your head. Turn your back to a large mirror and hold the small mirror in front of your face. Position it so you can inspect the top of your head for thinning. If you are, you will be able to see more of your scalp than usual.
Step 6
Take out some old pictures of yourself. Look in the mirror and compare what you looked like then and look like now. Pay attention to the shape of your hairline. If it has curved upward by the temples and is now making an "M" shape, then you are balding.
Step 7
Pay attention to the fine details of your hair. If you are balding, your hair can change in texture and it can become brittle.
