A dry scalp can be both bothersome and embarrassing, causing itchy and visible flaking of the skin. While many products are available, natural products are an alternative to harsh or expensive commercial remedies. Fish oil, tea tree oil, mayonnaise and mineral oil are some of the natural products with which you may consider treating your dry scalp.
Fish Oil
Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil are widely touted for their benefits to health. Supplement uses include treating heart disease, high cholesterol and a host of other diseases. Cosmetic uses for fish oil include improving acne and nourishing the skin. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, fish oil has been used to treat skin disorders like psoriasis and promote wound healing among burn victims. While the benefits for the skin are not proven, consuming fish oil supplements might help alleviate dry skin on the scalp. Side effects include drug interactions, flatulence, belching and diarrhea.
Mayonnnaise
Mayonnaise is more than a tasty condiment; it is also a natural product for conditioning a dry scalp. Apply several tablespoons of mayonnaise to clean, damp hair, then comb it through and let it absorb into the scalp and hair strands for 20 minutes. Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap if you wish. The egg and oil in mayonnaise are natural sources of moisture, adding shine and luster to dull, dry hair. Rinse it out well with warm water.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has been used for centuries to treat skin conditions. The oil is a natural anti-fungal and antiseptic, derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. Various products for dandruff are available over the counter with tea tree oil as a main ingredient; these can help your dry, flaky scalp.
Mineral Oil
Mineral oil is a natural product that can lubricate your dry scalp. It is used to ease the "cradle cap" flaking and irritation common in infants. You can purchase mineral oil at your drug store inexpensively. After wetting your hair, massage a small amount of mineral oil into your scalp for a few minutes, then shampoo.
