1. Rice Milk
Rice milk is a substitute for cow's milk. It is naturally lactose free, low in calories and cholesterol. Rice milk comes in special heat treated boxes and only kept in the fridge after opening. Rice milk separates easily. Shake the container thoroughly each time before you drink it. Rice milk is available in health food and specialty stores.
2. Almond Milk
Almond milk is a lactose-free and cholesterol-free substitute for cow's milk. It is the most expensive of all the milk substitutes and is available in health food stores in cartons. Available in regular, vanilla and chocolate flavors, vitamins are often added to this milk. Almond milk is also very low in calories when compared with cow's or soy milk. People have been drinking almond milk since the middle ages. It has the added benefit of not spoiling in room temperatures, but refrigerate after opening.
3. Goat's Milk
Goat's milk is a commonly available in grocery stores and is refrigerated. It has a high fat content and a taste very similar to cow's milk. Goat milk is very popular with people with allergies to cow's milk. They can digest goat's milk with no difficulty as it has a different type of protein. Goat's milk has smaller milk fat particles and is commonly used for nursing babies, the elderly and those with ulcers. The fatty acids in goats milk reduce the cholesterol in the body tissues. Nutritionally, goat's milk has the same vitamins and minerals as cow's milk.
4. Soy Milk
Soy milk is a very common substitute for cow's milk and is available in a number of options including low fat, chocolate and strawberry flavors. Soy milk can create other issues, as it contains plant hormones. While this can be beneficial to woman past menopause, it can cause symptoms in others. Be aware of an allergy to soy. This is seen in stomach bloating, joint pain and swelling. Reduce your soy intake to determine if this is the cause.
5. Lactose-Free Cow's Milk
Most major grocery store chains now carry lactose free cow's milk. This milk has been heated to release the lactose, cooled and then put into containers for sale. Lactose-free cow's milk has a slightly sweeter taste than regular milk. It also contains all the same vitamin and minerals as in regular milk. The dairy producers added a variety of options to this type of milk. It is now available in regular, whole, skim and partially skim and can be purchased in chocolate, strawberry and other flavors as well.
