Ingrown hairs are common and can occur anywhere on the body, though they are much more common on areas where you shave. Having an ingrown hair in your armpit can be uncomfortable, itchy and even painful. However, you can treat and remove ingrown hairs in this area very much like you would anywhere else on your body.
Step 1
Take a washcloth and soak it in warm water. Ring it out slightly, then press it onto your armpit for several minutes. You might want to soak the washcloth and apply it several times to thoroughly loosen up the hair follicle.
Step 2
Place tweezers in a cup or bowl with rubbing alcohol in it. This will sterilize the tweezers and prepare them for use on your skin. Make sure your hands are clean before touching the tweezers again.
Step 3
Take the tweezers and grasp the hair within the ingrown follicle. Look in a mirror to get a better look at what you're doing. The warm compress should have made the hair visible and soft. Grab the hair with the tweezers and gently tug. You shouldn't have to pull hard. In fact, if it gives you too much resistance, try applying the warm compress before trying again.
Step 4
Apply an antiseptic gel to the hair follicle to prevent infection. Neosporin is a popular choice since it's a gel and can be rubbed into place without making a huge mess.
Step 5
Prevent ingrown hairs from popping up in your armpits again by using shaving cream each time you shave, washing regularly and shaving carefully in the same direction as hair growth.
