Thinning hair may be unavoidable. General anesthesia, pregnancy, oral contraceptives and some medications may cause your hair to fall out for a time, but will most likely not lead to a permanent condition. Some simple vitamin supplements may help. For the restoration of thinning hair caused by other conditions such as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness, the best things you can do are use products made to thicken hair and get some Rogaine. Although there are no guarantees that your hair will grow back and fill in those thin spots completely, at least you'll be able to make the most of the hair you have and hopefully halt the loss.
Step 1
Add Rogaine to your daily toilette. Use it to stop thinning hair and even stimulate new growth, but don't hold your breath. Use Rogaine twice a day for at least six months before you expect progress, advises Dr. Alan Bauman in an article on the Daily Herald's website called "Women Get to the Root of Hair Loss." Dr. Bauman is a hair loss specialist. Keep using Rogaine as long as you want to keep your hair. The effects are only good for as long as you're using the product.
Step 2
Take 10 to 15 milligrams of DHEA daily if you're post-menopausal. Low levels of DHEA may cause thinning hair, but Dr. Jonathan V. Wright says that DHEA supplements may help in his Nutrition & Healing newsletter.
Step 3
Take a B-complex vitamin supplement. Dr. Wright says that pregnant women or those on birth control that are experiencing thinning hair may benefit from B vitamins, particulary vitamin B6 and folate. Everyone can benefit from B vitamins as they all are important for hair production, says Dr. Nicole Sundene in an article called "How to Grow Your Hair Super Fast!" in Kitchen Table Medicine online magazine.
Step 4
Try a volumizing shampoo and conditioner with rosemary or mint. Wash your hair every other day to keep it healthy and clean without stripping hair of its essential oils. Rosemary and mint are linked with hair production, says Dr. Sundene. Volumizing shampoos and conditioners with vitamin B3 and wheat proteins can increase the thickness of your hair by double and restore it to its former thickness, according to an article on the Good Housekeeping web site called "Party Time? Fake Fuller Hair."
Step 5
Avoid using a moisturizing shampoo as the heavy ingredients may weigh your hair down, says Lisa Chiccine of the Lisa Chiccine Salon in New York City.
