Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine) is a medication used to treat the symptoms of the common cold and allergies. According to Drugs.com, this medication is an antihistamine that decreases your body's production of histamine, a natural substance released in your body that causes itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose and sneezing. Chlor-Trimeton is available as a tablet, capsule or liquid that is typically taken every 4 to 6 hours or as your doctor prescribes, says MedlinePlus.
Common Side Effects
According to MedlinePlus, Chlor-Trimeton's side effects include constipation, nausea, vomiting and a poor appetite. Excessive vomiting can lead to dehydration and hypokalemia (low potassium levels). It is important to drink 8 to 10 cups of water daily in order to rehydrate your body. Simply eating vegetables and fruits can restore your potassium levels. Chlor-Trimeton can also cause a headache, dry mouth, nose or throat, drowsiness and increased chest congestion. In some instances, this medication can cause memory problems, restlessness and excitation, says Drugs.com. It is important to tell your physician if these symptoms persist longer than 3 days.
Serious Side Effects
Chlor-Trimeton can cause serious effects such as trouble breathing, confusion, drowsiness and decreased urination, says Drugs.com. Infrequent urination can lead to high levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), a substance produced in your kidneys. With decreased urination, you can become dehydrated and go into acute renal (kidney) failure. Chlor-Trimeton can also cause confusion, anxiety and nervousness. Inform your doctor right away if Chlor-Trimeton causes you to develop any of these side effects.
Additional Concerns
You should not take Chlor-Trimeton if you have glaucoma, severe constipation, kidney, thyroid or prostate problems, says Drugs.com. Chlor-Trimeton may worsen these conditions.
It is unclear whether Chlor-Trimeton can make its way into breast milk or harm your baby during pregnancy. Tell your medical provider if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
Avoid taking Chlor-Trimeton when taking antidepressant medications, mepenzolate, aspirin, bronchodilators, monoamine oxidase inhibitors as rasagaline and diclomine. Chlor-Trimeton can combine with these drugs and raise the risk of side effects.
