How to Choose a Child Day Care Center

Choosing the best day care center for your child can take time, patience and a lot of research. A good day care center is important for your child's safety--and your peace of mind. Start by making a list of your child care requirements and any questions you want to ask day care centers about staffing and policies.

Step 1

Make a list of the day care centers in your area. Seek out referrals from friends and family who have used day care centers.

Step 2

Call each day care center, ask some general questions and set up an in-person interview. Ask if the day care center is licensed, if there is a waiting list for child care and go over your list of requirements before scheduling an interview.

Step 3

Visit the day care center and speak with the director. Bring your list of questions. Ask if you can interview day care staff members and watch as the staff members interact with children attending the center.

Step 4

Tour each day care facility. Inspect the play areas, sleeping areas and kitchen and washroom facilities. Visit outside play areas as well. Write down notes about each child care center you visit. Make follow-up calls to day care centers if you have additional questions or need clarification on anything.

Step 5

Weigh your options. Decide which day care center feels the most comfortable. Don't rush your decision.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consider making an impromptu visit to each child care center, after the initial interview, to gauge how the staff interacts with children at different times of the day. Study your state's laws and policies for child care centers so you know exactly what is required by law when you meet with each center. Ask about a trial period before signing any long-term child care contract.
