Brovex Side Effects

Brovex (brompheniramine) is a medication used to manage the manifestations of the common cold and allergies. According to Drugs.com, it is an antihistamine that reduces itchy or watery eyes, a runny nose, rashes and hives. Brovex is available as a chewable tablet, extended-release capsule and liquid. MedlinePlus indicates that you should take the chewable tablet or liquid every four to six hours as necessary, or the extended-release capsule every eight to 12 hours as needed. Your doctor will determine the right Brovex's dosage for you.

Common Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, Brovex's common side effects include a headache, dry mouth and drowsiness. Use caution when driving and when participating in certain activities that require you to be completely awake. Brovex can also provoke dry mouth and lead to an enlarged prostate.
MedlinePlus indicates that Brovex may cause chest congestion, nausea and a dry nose or throat. A dry nose can lead to crusting of the inner mucosal layers of your nose and subsequent, epistaxis (nose bleeds). Fortunately, Brovex's common effects are not life threatening but inform your doctor when these symptoms last for three to four days. He may adjust your Broves dose in order to rid you of these bothersome side effects.

Serious Side Effects

Brovex is not expected to cause any potentially life-threatening side effects. However, MedlinePlus indicates that its most serious side effects include visual problems and trouble urinating. Urinary problems can go as far as acute or chronic renal (kidney) failure if you don't urinate for more than one week. Your doctor will perform an ultrasound of your bladder to evaluate how much urine is retained there. He will place a catheter in your urethra to safely drain your urine. It is important to know that everyone responds differently to medication. You may develop a side effect not mentioned here. Inform your doctor right away when this occurs.

Additional Concerns

You should not drink alcohol while taking Brovex. The combination alone can cause drowsiness and dizziness.
Do not take Brovex if you are allergic to brompheniramine or any other antihistamine medication. A potentially fatal hypersensitivity reaction can result. Symptoms of this hypersensitivity reaction include difficulty breathing, hives and swelling of your throat, face or lips. Call 911.
Avoid taking Brovex when you have glaucoma, bladder problems, an enlarged prostate gland, a stomach ulcer, heart problems and hypertension (high blood pressure), says Drugs.com.
Brovex contaminates breast milk. Tell your physician if you are breastfeeding. It is unknown whether Brovex plays a role in harming your baby during pregnancy. Notify your doctor when you are pregnant.
Avoid combining Brovex with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as phenilzine, sleep medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants and convulsive medications. Brovex can interact with any of these drugs and provoke the aforementioned problems.
