Rimso-50 Side Effects

Rimso-50 (dimethyl sulfoxide) is a medication used to manage fungal and bacterial bladder infections, says Drugs.com. Specifically, it eases dysuria (pain during urination). According to the National Library of Medicine, a medical care professional will place 50mL of Rimso-50 directly into your bladder using a catheter (thin sterile tube inserted into your urethra). Treatment is typically given every 2 weeks or until your urinary symptoms have subsided.

Common Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, you might develop a garlic or onion taste in your mouth after receiving Rimso-50 treatment. This may last for 72 hours. In some cases, you may develop garlic or onion-smelling breath and skin, which can be worrisome in social situations. This side effect should subside on its own, but talk to your doctor if they persist for more than 4 days.

Serious Side Effects

The most serious side effect of Rimso-50 is transient chemical cystitis, a Rimso-induced urinary tract inflammation. Symptoms include dysuria (burning pain upon urination), flank pain and nausea. Rimso-50 can also intensify discomfort as the catheter is placed into your urethra and manipulated into your bladder. Tell your doctor if Rimso-50 causes any of these side effects.

Other Concerns

Drugs.com says that it is unclear if Rimso-50 contaminates human milk or harms your baby during pregnancy. Tell your physician if you plan to breast feed, or if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.
Prior to taking Rimso-50, tell your doctor if you suffer from kidney cancer or other bladder problems. Rimso-50 can exacerbate these medical problems.
