A DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, is a blood clot in the arms or legs that can cause significant symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, a DVT can cause swelling, pain, redness, warmth and cramps. In addition, a DVT can be dangerous because it can travel through the vessels to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. This results in chest pain, increased heart rate and difficulty breathing.
Inactivity
Inactivity is the main risk factor for developing a DVT. This occurs because the muscles in the lower leg aren't pushing blood back up to the heart. Blood that sits in the veins for extended periods tends to clot. Extended periods of inactivity can include bed rest, long drives and long trips on a plane. Reduce your risk of developing a DVT by taking walking breaks every hour.
Blood Clotting Disorder
You may have a disorder that allows your blood to clot quicker than those without a blood clotting disorder. According to the Mayo Clinic, this inherited condition may not be a problem unless associated with another risk factor. If you have a known blood clotting disorder, be sure to follow the instructions from your doctor to prevent blood clots.
Vessel Damage
Damage to the blood vessels from an injury or surgery can cause blood to excessively clot and result in a DVT. Medline Plus says that hip, knee or female reproductive organ surgery are procedures associated with a high risk of blood clotting. In addition, the Mayo Clinic reports that general anesthetics used during surgery can increase your risk of blood pooling and clotting. Alert your doctor if you suspect that you have a DVT after a recent surgery or injury.
Pregnancy
According to the Mayo Clinic, pregnancy is a risk for a DVT because pregnancy increases the pressure in your veins in your pelvis and legs. In addition, the risk for DVT is elevated for the first six weeks after giving birth. Be cautious of the symptoms of a DVT if you are pregnant.
Smoking
The top preventable risk of DVT formation is smoking. According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking affects how the blood clots and circulates through the body.
