Boxing is a sport that is demanding and dangerous. The obvious danger is that you can get seriously hurt when you get hit by a punch or a series of punches. These punches are particularly dangerous when they land in the head area. However, throwing punches can also cause injuries to the puncher's hands. The bones in the hands--along with the tendons in your fingers and wrist--are vulnerable when a hard punch hits a hard head. To prevent injuries to your hands, you have to wrap them properly before entering the boxing ring.
Step 1
Take the hand wrap (also known as "tape") and wrap it three times around your wrist. This will be the starting point for your hand wrap, and it must be secure. However, it cannot be wrapped too tightly or it will affect your circulation.
Step 2
Go around your thumb twice with the hand wrap, then start wrapping the tape around the lower portion of your hands. Keep wrapping the tape around your hand until you are about 1/2 inch below your fingers.
Step 3
Make your next wrapping around the small finger. Take the wrap outside your small finger and bring it around your thumb two times. Then bring it around your small finger again and then make the next wrap go around your forefinger. You are now ready to complete the wrap.
Step 4
Wrap four times around your hand, going up to the first knuckle and then no further. The higher up on the hand your go, the less you will be able to move your fingers once they are wrapped. You are going to constantly have to adjust your fingers during the course of your boxing match, so that means your hand wrap cannot be a tight one. However, failing to wrap the tape tight enough will result in it loosening and then bunching up around the lower part of the hand. It is a trial-and-error process among inexperienced tapers, so it is recommended that you try this procedure several times before your boxing match.
