A Natural Treatment for Ringing in the Ear

If you experience ringing or other noises in your ears, you may have tinnitus, a condition characterized by odd noises heard in the ears which may be caused by damage to the nerve endings. Tinnitus interferes with a person's ability to hear sounds properly. If the noise in your ears bothers you, there is a technique you can try to reduce or possibly eliminate the noises.

Step 1

Rest the palms of your hands alongside your head, covering your ears with the section of the palms nearest your wrist, explains Dr. Jan Strydom of Health.learninginfo.org. Your fingers should be held gently on the back of your head, pointing toward one another.

Step 2

Hold your hands so that the fingers extend and the tips of the middle fingers just barely touch, and are resting on the base of your skull about one inch above where your skull meets your neck.

Step 3

Place your index fingers on top of your middle fingers like you would do to cross the fingers.

Step 4

Firmly snap the crossed index fingers off the middle fingers against the base of the skull. Make sure you are not snapping onto your neck but onto the occiput, the bone at the base of the skull. There will a loud drumming, hollow sound. Repeat the finger snapping action about 50 times.

Step 5

Lower your intake of salt and caffeine, both of which are capable of constricting the capillaries in your head and ears, impairing blood supply, according to alternative medical physician Dr. Andrew Weil.

Step 6

Avoid loud noises which can further cause damage to the nerves in the ears and head adding to problems from tinnitus.

Tips and Warnings

  • The drumming exercise may be repeated several times a day as needed to reduce noises in the ears from tinnitus.
