C-Section Complications After Surgery

A cesarean section poses a higher risk for developing complications than a natural vaginal delivery. Some of these complications include infection, deep vein thrombosis, and surgical adhesions. Although most women have an uneventful delivery and recovery, you should be aware of the signs and symptoms of these complications so that you may recognize them if they happen to you.

Infection

Any break in skin integrity runs the risk for possible infection. Signs and symptoms of infection are fever, and redness and swelling at the surgical site. Wound drainage and discharge may also be present. If you experience any of these symptoms you should contact your obstetrician immediately. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

People who have undergone surgery or are on bed rest for a period of time are at an increased risk of developing a blood clot in their legs, also known as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Pregnant women are also at a higher risk risk of developing DVT's. Symptoms of a DVT may include leg pain, redness or swelling. You may also be able to feel a hardened area or lump in your leg. You may be able to lower your risk of a DVT by wearing compression boots in the hospital. You should also get up and walk, as soon as you get an OK from your doctor, to keep your blood flowing freely throughout your legs. If you think you may be experiencing a DVT, contact your physician immediately.

Surgical Adhesions

Surgical adhesions are areas of scar tissue that form inside the pelvis or abdomen after abdominal surgery. This is common in women who have undergone a C-section. This scar tissue will often diminish over time. However, in some women adhesions may cause complications. These include pelvic or abdominal pain, bowel obstruction and future infertility. The adhesions may also complicate subsequent pregnancies. If you experience any of these issues, contact your obstetrician for further care.
