How to Increase Self Confidence

Self-confidence can be tough to build and easy to break down. Believing in yourself is vital to your success in your interpersonal relationships and career, so it's important to engage in activities that boost your self-confidence and help you present your very best to the world. Even if you are starting from a point of low self-confidence, you can take action to build it.

Step 1

Identify three things that you like about your appearance and three things you think are winning about your personality. Be honest with yourself and give credit where credit is due. Any time you are feeling down, remind yourself of these traits and the fact that you have much to offer your employer, co-workers, partner, friends and family.

Step 2

Surround yourself with positive people. Friends with positive attitudes often pass that attitude along to you. If you have a negative friend or co-worker who is constantly putting you down, avoid this person as much as possible. Stay away from people who make you feel bad about yourself.

Step 3

Learn how to say no. You may have a difficult time saying no and end up taking on projects and chores you don't want to do or attending events you don't really want to attend. Constantly feeling as if you are taken advantage of will not build confidence. Therefore, practice saying no by imagining scenarios in your daily life in which you would prefer to say no. Say no assertively and calmly. The ability to stand up for yourself goes a long way in improving your self-esteem.

Step 4

Attempt something you have never done before and be proud of yourself even if it does not smoothly. Whether it's taking ballroom dancing lessons or ascending your local gym's climbing wall, try something you've wanted to do but been too scared to try. You may be surprised at what you can achieve. Congratulate yourself for trying; don't worry about whether you succeed perfectly.

Step 5

Choose an area where you lack confidence and do something to boost your knowledge and skill. For example, if there is an aspect of your work you feel unsure of, take a class, purchase a book or seek training from a co-worker. Don't mistake this desire to better yourself as a sign of weakness; instead see it as a sign of strength.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have taken these steps and do not have a more positive mindset, it may be a good idea to seek professional counseling to identify the challenges in your life that may be keeping you from developing self-confidence.
