Thinning hair can affect women for a variety of reasons. Stress, pregnancy, extreme dieting, and surgery can temporarily cause women to lose hair that will likely grow back once conditions change. However, more than 30 million women in America will see some hair loss as they get older, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Many people are familiar with the condition known as male-pattern baldness, but female-pattern baldness is also starting to get attention. Although women rarely lose all their hair, they may experience thinning on the sides, front and crown of their heads. Using a laser comb, Rogaine, and taking vitamin supplements can prevent additional hair loss.
Step 1
Stimulate your hair follicles a few days a week with a home cosmetic device called a laser comb. Hold the red light of the comb over each section of your hair for a few seconds. You should not feel any heat from the low-level laser. Use of a laser comb should help you keep and thicken the hair you have, according to an article in on Washingtonian.com.
Step 2
Apply Rogaine for Women twice a day. Rub the foam into your scalp and roots along the front, sides and crown of your head, or wherever you can see thinning areas. Use the foam version, as it is gentler on your skin than the spray, according to Dr. Alan Bauman, a hair loss expert. Dr. Bauman says in the "Daily Herald" article that women should not give up on Rogaine if they do not see quick results. Use the product consistently for at least six months, and do not stop once you see it working or your hair may begin to thin again.
Step 3
Ask your doctor if any medications you are taking could be responsible for your hair loss. If so, ask if there are alternatives to your medication. Have your thyroid checked while you're there, as sometimes an overactive or underactive thyroid could be the reason for your thinning hair, according to Dr. Jonathan V. Wright's newsletter Nutrition & Healing.
Step 4
Take a multivitamin daily. B vitamins, particularly folate and vitamin B6, are important for hair growth. Dr. Wright says that supplementing with a vitamin B complex or multivitamin can reverse thinning hair caused by taking birth control pills or pregnancy.
Tips and Warnings
- Ask your doctor if Rogaine Extra Strength is right for you. Some women may see better results from this version of the popular hair loss treatment. Dye your hair. The dye in permanent hair color can cause a 1/3 increase in the thickness of each strand of hair, according to Washingtonian.com.
