Depression is a condition involving your entire body and mind. It interferes with your ability to function as you normally would, due its symptoms of hopelessness, sadness, anxiety and guilt, all of which vary in severity with each person. If left untreated, these debilitating symptoms can continue for months, or even years. However, with the right treatment and coping mechanisms, depression can be overcome.

Get Enough Rest

According to HelpGuide.org, there is a direct correlation between depression and a lack of sleep. To combat this, try to get a complete eight hours of sleep each night.

If you have a difficult time falling asleep, make sure your sleeping environment is what it needs to be. Keep your room dark; too much light will make your body believe it is time to wake. Turn the noise level down; this includes sound from radios, televisions and conversations taking place between others in your home. Finally, make sure the temperature is just right in your room. If it is too hot or cold, you will be uncomfortable, and sleep will evade you.

Seek Therapy

The most common type of therapy used to treat depression is psychotherapy. According to Psychologyinfo.com, it helps to relieve the pain caused by depression while determining what's causing you to feel so hopeless.

Psychotherapy also helps you change the negative thoughts and unrealistic expectations which are responsible for your depression. Your therapist will help replace all the negative components with positive goals, helping you achieve a more positive self-esteem. In addition, you will learn problem-solving and coping skills to apply to the areas of your life which contribute the most to your condition.

Try Medication

Medication may be useful for some who suffer from depression, as it eases the symptoms while you work through the actual problem. It is by no means a cure, though. According to the Mayo Clinic, dozens of medications are available to treat depression. These medications, most of which are antidepressants, are generally most effective when used in combination with psychotherapy. They work by restoring balance to the chemicals in the brain. Many doctors' first choice when prescribing antidepressants are SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These appear to be the most effective and cause the fewest side effects.

Exercise

One of the most powerful elements in overcoming depression is regular exercise. Taking a walk for 20 or 30 minutes a day can help, although you need to do it consistently to see results. According to Nan Little, life coach, wellness advisor for the 123 Feel Better Company and managing editor of Insight Journal, exercise stimulates the production of neurochemicals such as serotonin. This increased production can elevate your mood while the physicality of exercising helps relieve built-up anger, frustration and anxiety that accompany your depression.

Join a Support Group

Joining a support group for those who suffer from depression not only allows you to bond with others experiencing the same feelings as yourself, it allows you to encourage one another when you are feeling down. You can learn coping mechanisms from one another, share your experiences and decrease the amount of time you spend by yourself.
