Vectical (calcitriol) is a medication used to treat plaque psoriasis, a serious autoimmune skin condition characterized by silver plaques on the surface of your skin. According to MedlinePlus, Vectical is a form of vitamin D that helps reduce skin cell production. This medication is available as an ointment and is typically applied to the affected area twice a day, in the morning and night, says the National Library of Medicine.
Common Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, Vectical's more common side effects include skin discomfort and itching. In a study of 419 patients taking Vectical, the National Library of Medicine found that 3 percent developed a discomforting feeling on their skin, while 1 percent experienced itching. These side effects are not life threatening, but tell your physician when these side effects last for three to five days. He may ask you to decrease the frequency of Vectical use or give you an alternative ointment to treat your plaque psoriasis.
Serious Side Effects
Vectical can cause hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in your blood). In a clinical-trial study of 74 patients receiving Vectical, the National Library of Medicine says that 24 percent developed hypercalcemia. Symptoms of hypercalcemia include constipation, nausea, vomiting and kidney stones. Vomiting can cause extreme dehydration and hypokalemia (lowered potassium levels in your blood). Remember to drink eight to nine full glasses of water every day to replenish your lost water stores. Also, consume four to five servings of fruit and vegetables every day to increase your potassium levels. Hypercalcemia can lead to kidney stone formations as the stone itself is composed of calcium and another component called oxalate. Stay away from the sun, as Vectical makes you extremely sensitive to sun exposure. This is medically known as photosensitivity. Vectical's other serious side effects include blistering, itching and worsened psoriasis. Call your doctor immediately when Vectical causes these symptoms.
Additional Concerns
Avoid Vectical if you are allergic to calcitriol or any other vitamin D-based medications. Trouble breathing and edema (swelling) of your tongue, face and throat can result. It is unclear whether Vectical can pass into breast milk or harm your baby in pregnancy. Prior to taking Vectical, tell your doctor whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Drugs.com says that you must not combine Vectical with such medicines as hydrochlorothiazide and indapamide, as the mixture can provoke the aforementioned medical side effects.
