Overview

Viagra is a common medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). This medication works by enlarging blood vessels in the penis during sexual arousal. This enlargement in blood vessels allows the inflow of blood needed for an erection, according to Drugs.com. As with all medications that you may be taking, you should be aware of their ingredients and possible side effects.

Sildenafil

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra. Sildenafil causes a release of nitrous oxide (NO), which is a chemical that causes the blood vessels in the penis to enlarge during sexual stimulation, according to Viagra.com. Sildenafil is considered effective in treating ED. Viagra.com reports that in eight well-designed studies, Viagra improved erection in comparison to those taking a sugar-pill. The common side effects of sildenafil include abnormal vision, acid indigestion, diarrhea, flushing, headache, nasal congestion and urinary tract infection, according to Drugs.com. If you are experiencing any of the side effects or are not noticing any improvement in your erection, you should alert your doctor.

Inactive Ingredients

Inactive ingredients, or excipients, are added to drugs to help with ease of use and to support the effectiveness of the active ingredient. Inactive ingredients do not have any direct effect on symptoms. The inactive ingredients in Viagra are microcrystalline cellulose, anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, lactose, and triacetin. If you have allergies to any of these inactive ingredients, you should alert your doctor before taking Viagra.

Coloring Ingredients

Drugs.com lists the coloring ingredient as FD & C Blue #2 aluminum lake. According to the Food and Drug Administration, food coloring additives are safe when used correctly. Therefore, you should not be concerned about this inactive ingredient in Viagra.
