Symptoms of Tylenol Codeine Overdose

Tylenol with codeine is commonly sold under the name Tylenol #3 or Tylenol 3, explains the National Institute of Health (NIH). The two drugs mixed together are used as a pain reliever. Codeine is a narcotic and is an effective pain reducer. Tylenol is an over-the-counter drug, but when mixed with codeine it requires a prescription. Due to the strength of Tylenol 3, it is imperative that patients follow their doctor's prescribing information. An overdose can lead to moderate or severe complications, including death. Symptoms of Tylenol with codeine overdose should be reported to a doctor immediately as emergency medical care may be necessary.

Airways and Lungs

The NIH reports several symptoms of overdose that affect the airways and lungs. These include shallow breathing, slow or labored breathing and even respiratory arrest. The effect a Tylenol with codeine overdose has on breathing can lead to loss of consciousness or death. Permanent damage can result from prolonged lack of oxygen to the brain.

Skin and Eyes

The pupils may become constricted, explains the NIH. Drugs.com also warns of jaundice, or the yellowing of the skin or eyes. This is often the result of the acetaminophen, or Tylenol and the effect it has on the liver. An overdose of the drug can cause the skin to be cold, clammy, blue or sweaty.

Digestive System Symptoms

Abdominal pain, vomiting, kidney failure, liver failure or spasms of the stomach and intestines are all signs of Tylenol with codeine overdose, states the NIH. Drugs.com suggests that nausea or vomiting may be persistent.

Other Symptoms

The blood pressure may drop suddenly or gradually resulting in fainting or other issues. An individual may experience moderate to severe drowsiness or convulsions, indicates the NIH. The overdose can cause the individual to appear to be in a stupor or unaware of his surroundings. A coma may result when the organs begin to fail or the brain does not receive enough blood or oxygen.
