Low blood glucose, or hypoglycemia, occurs when your level of blood sugar drops too low. This can happen as a complication of diabetes or many other conditions. It is not a disease itself but a symptom of one. If you take steps right away to correct your blood sugar, there are no long-term effects. However, if left untreated, you can develop complications. The first step is to learn to recognize the signs and symptoms.

Common Symptoms

Without enough glucose available, you may become hungry and crave sweets. You may feel anxious, shaky, weak and sleepy. Additional symptoms include tremors, abnormal sweating and heart palpitations. You may also feel depressed and experience mood swings, and your hands and feet may constantly be cold.

Additional Symptoms

If your level of blood sugar drops too low, your body will not have the energy it needs to do its job. This may lead to confusion, inability to focus and complete simple tasks, blurred or double vision and fainting. Your skin may become pale, and you may have a headache. You may also develop tingling sensations in or around your mouth.

Severe Symptoms

If your level drops excessively low, you may have seizures or lose consciousness. At this point, you need immediate medical attention and may have to have an injection of glucose. You may feel confused when you come to. In severe cases, hypoglycemia can be fatal.
