Gifts for the Mother of Twins

With an increase in twin births of 74 percent over the last 20 years, odds are strong that you know a mom with twins. Although it is true that mothers of twins need the same gifts that any new mom would welcome, don't forget to consider the logistical, financial and emotional challenges faced by mothers of multiples.

Gifts That Help

Some practical gifts are obvious: A good double stroller (quality and ease of use are even more important for mothers of twins) and sufficient supplies of clothes, diapers and sheets will top the list. A nursing pillow to help the new mom nurse two babies is a thoughtful gift. Consider a gentle yet effective hand soap to make double the hand-washing pleasant for mom. Books filled with practical tips about parenting twins will help, but considering the potential lack of time for reading, a subscription to Twins magazine may be a better choice. Some manufacturers of baby products offer coupons or discounts for parents of multiples, so do some research and assemble a package of "deals" for Mom.

Gifts of Time

Offer your time to babysit, run errands or do regular shopping. Arrange for and manage a network of helpers. Contact friends, family or church members for commitments of time to babysit or help with feedings, then make a schedule and follow up with reminders to all who are helping. Prepare meals (do this yourself or call upon that network), or give a gift certificate from a meal preparation service.

Gifts That Pamper

Think about what the individual mom truly loves for an indulgence. Perhaps that means gifting a box of expensive chocolates, a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant or some other luxury that may not be in the budget now that twins have arrived. Gift baskets can serve many purposes. Assemble a breakfast basket for busy mornings; a celebration basket with wine and cheese; a bath basket with candles, pampering soaps, shampoo and a loofah; or a beauty basket with fabulous face and body creams, makeup and hair products. Give a gift certificate to a local spa. (Don't forget to arrange for babysitting.)

Gifts That Announce

Mothers of twins have double the joy, so find gifts that show love and pride. Consider jewelry with a double heart to represent twins, bracelets that display the babies' names or clothing that proclaims the joy of twins.

Twin Considerations

Twins are often smaller than typical newborns and may need preterm-size pacifiers and clothing. Additionally, until the babies grow and their unique personalities begin to shine, it may be difficult for Mom to tell them apart. Ease the identification problems by making sure that gifts of clothing are color-coded, or give a supply of two colors of nail polish that can be dabbed on each baby's big toe.
