List of Side Effects of Heparin

Heparin is a prescription anticoagulant, which means that it is a blood-thinning medication used to prevent the formation of blood clots in the circulatory system. It can be used to assist heart and lung conditions or disorders of the vascular system. Additionally, it is given preoperatively to stop blood clots from occurring after surgery. Heparin is available in injection and oral form. Those with cardiac, pulmonary, liver or hematological (low platelet count) conditions should make the physician aware of this before taking heparin.

Skin Effects

Usually the immediate skin site around where the heparin was injected may become red and irritated or be tender to the touch with mild pain. Other reported side effects of this medication include itching of the feet as well as skin changing to a bluish color. These are common side effects from receiving a heparin injection, which are considered mild; however, if concerns remain contact your physician for clarification.

Stomach Effects

Potential side effects of taking this medication may involve gastric upset. For example, symptoms such as nausea with or without vomiting may be experienced. Additionally, lightheadedness may occur with profuse sweating. A physician should be contacted if these symptoms persist.

Bleeding Effects

Heparin is an anticoagulant, thus too much of this medication can result in serious consequences due to excessive bleeding. Pay attention to any blood that may be present in urine, stools or gastric contents as well as bleeding gums or nosebleeds; additionally, note if any unusual bruising or bleeding occurs that is not typical for the individual. Also, thrombocytopenia is a condition where an individual has an abnormalIy low number of platelets; thus, another side effect is known as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) or heparin-induced thrombocytopenia thrombosis (HITT). Medical attention should be sought immediately if any of these effects manifest.

Other Effects

Heparin has the potential to produce a variety of other side effects. For example, if this drug is used a long time, it may lead to osteoporosis, a bone disease where bones become brittle and vulnerable to fractures. Heparin also can cause painful erections in men. Chest pain or squeezing-like pressure in the chest as well as in the jaw, arms and neck may occur. Other reported side effects include severe headaches, sudden confusion with vision problems, coordination difficulties and weakness in the extremities. Additionally, heparin has been associated with the onset of flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, breathing difficulty and a runny nose. Seek immediate medical attention immediately to investigate these symptoms.
