Home Acne Scar Treatments

Acne scarring occurs when acne breakouts are routinely picked and popped, causing damage to the skin. When the active acne has already cleared, acne scarring can stay on the skin for weeks or months afterward. Due to the fact that acne scars are tougher and drier than the surrounding skin, it is helpful to use a few household remedies to loosen the scars, scrub off the loosened skin with a gentle facial scrub, and apply a substance high in vitamin C to help build new skin cells.

Oil Soak

Non-comedogenic oils can soften the skin and loosen scarred tissues without clogging the pores. Some of these oils include jojoba oil, olive oil and castor oil. Any of these oils can be used to loosen scars to allow them to be removed from the skin more easily. Massage 1 tsp. of a chosen oil into the skin for around two minutes, then spread 1 tsp. onto the face. Allow the oil to remain on the skin for five minutes, then drape a steaming hot washcloth over the face to further loosen the dead, scarred skin. Once the washcloth cools, use it to wipe off the oil. An oil soak can be applied once per day to loosened scarred tissue.

Gentle Scrub

Exfoliating the skin with a gentle scrub, such as baking soda, removes the dead, scarred skin cells that the oil soak loosened. Baking soda contains smooth, rounded particulates that will buff off scarred tissue without scratching or damaging the skin. To apply a baking soda scrub, mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water, and massage the mixture onto the face using small, circular motions with the fingers. After one to two minutes, rinse off the skin with warm water. You can use a baking soda scrub once per day to scrub away scarred skin.

Vitamin C Toner

Re-balance the complexion by applying a toner high in vitamin C, which supports the skin in developing new skin cells. Lemon juice is very high in vitamin C, and can be applied undiluted to help the skin build new cells. To apply lemon juice to the skin, fill an empty spray bottle with lemon juice, then spray the face liberally after it has been exfoliated. Allow the lemon juice to dry onto the skin, and re-apply it up to three times per day to help the complexion become more evenly toned.
