Types of Hair Wax Treatments

Waxing involves applying wax to a region of your body where you'd like hair removed. The wax attaches to the hair and when it is removed, the hair comes with it, leaving a smooth, clean surface. The process can be uncomfortable, depending on the region you're waxing. However, the results are relatively long-lasting, ranging from three to eight weeks.

Cold Waxing

You can purchase cold waxing kits at a drugstore or beauty supply store. This type of waxing treatment uses pre-waxed strips that you apply to the region you'd like hair-free. Cold waxing is most often used on the face to trim eyebrows or sideburns, or remove hair from the lip or chin area.
The benefit of cold waxing is that it's relatively quick, since you need neither heat the wax nor wait for it to dry. It's also useful for treating large areas in one fell swoop. However, it can be difficult to clean up any leftover wax, it's somewhat more painful than warm waxing and it can cause more irritation to your skin.

Warm Wax With Strips

You can purchase warm wax kits with linen strips at most drugstores or beauty supply chains. Warm waxing that involves strips is used for all types of hair. Most often, though, you'll see it used for eyebrow waxing and the bikini area at the top of the leg. With warm waxing and strips, you heat the wax and apply it to the region you'd like hair-free. Then place linen strips on top of the wax, wait for the wax to dry, and pull the wax and hair off, opposite the direction of the hair growth.
The benefit to using warm wax with strips is that the wax bonds to the hair better, making multiple applications of wax unnecessary. Using strips ensures a clear pulling tool to remove the wax. However, strips can be uncomfortable in sensitive areas and the process is slower than cold waxing.

Warm Wax Without Strips

You can purchase warm wax kits at most beauty supply stores or drugstores. Warm waxing that doesn't involve strips is used for coarse hair, such as the bikini area of underarm. Warm waxing involves applying wax to the spot you'd like hair-free and waiting for the wax to dry. Then peel the wax off opposite the direction of the hair growth in one swift motion.
The benefit to warm waxing without strips is that it's very effective in hard-to-wax areas, such as under the arm, where the hair growth isn't in one clear direction. In addition, warm wax bonds better to hair, making this waxing treatment more efficient. However, it can be difficult to find an edge from which to begin pulling, so it requires some expertise and practice. In addition, you can only wax one small region at a time.
