Dermatologist Treatments for Hair Loss

The loss of hair is not normally something to be concerned about. In fact, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, most people shed as many as 100 hairs every day. Unfortunately, whether from age, genetics or some type of disorder or disease, many people throughout the United States lose more than this amount, leading to thinning hair or bald spots. When this occurs, one of the first resources to turn to is your dermatologist.

Prescriptions

Although there are over-the-counter products on the market to treat hair loss, your dermatologist has the ability to prescribe more powerful options that will most likely give you much better results. For example, dermatologists have the ability to prescribe Finasteride (Propecia), a prescription medication that helps block dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for breaking down hair follicles. They can also prescribe other prescription hair-loss treatments such as corticosteroids or Anthralin.

Hair Transplant

When medication is not enough, another option your dermatologist may suggest is hair transplant surgery. Hair transplants involve taking donor scalp and hair from areas of your head with healthier hair growth, and grafting it to areas of the scalp with little or no hair growth. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, after a hair transplant, it can take up to six months for grafted areas to start looking like natural hair growth.

Scalp Reduction

Scalp reduction is another option for hair loss treatment that can be provided by your dermatologist. Scalp reduction involves removing the scalp in areas that are balding, pulling the remaining scalp together, and securing it in place with stitches or other closing techniques. This brings hair-covered areas of the scalp together, reducing or completely removing the bald spot in the process. The amount of scalp reduction that can be done depends on how much excess skin is available to remove.
