Doryx Prescription Side Effects

Doryx, generic name doxycycline, is a tetracycline antibiotic and is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. From acne and urinary tract infections to sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, Doryx serves many purposes. It has a variety of side effects as well, some of which may give you second thoughts when deciding whether it is the drug of choice for you.

Expected Side Effects

According to eMedTV.com, Doryx is an old medication, released for public use before the FDA began testing for possible side effects. Therefore, limited information is available about them. The most commonly reported side effects however, and ones you can expect, include an inflammation of your tongue, which can result in problems swallowing; gastrointestinal problems such as upset stomach, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea; and sores in your genital or rectal area. You may also find sores or white patches appearing on your lips or inside your mouth and experience vaginal discharge or itching.

Serious Side Effects

Drugs.com recommends calling your physician immediately if you experience what are considered to be serious side effects. These include bouts of watery diarrhea, bloody stools, blurred vision, joint pain, feeling continuously tired, severe stomach cramps and headaches. You should also be concerned if you experience flu-like symptoms such as a fever, body aches or chills; find yourself urinating less frequently or urination has completely ceased; you have a loss of appetite along with a yellowing of your skin or eyes; or suffer from nausea or vomiting.

Allergic Reaction

Not everyone who takes Doryx will know they are allergic to it until they take it. Any sign of an allergic reaction is reason to seek emergency medical attention as it can be life-threatening. These signs include difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, the development of an unexplained rash, hives and swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat.
