Inerstitial cystitis is a chronic disease of the bladder. It causes inflammation and in some cases, ulcerations called Hunner's ulcers. Inerstitial cystisis causes painful, frequent and urgent urination. Feelings of pressure and spasms in the bladder are also common symptoms. The lining of the bladder is protected by enzymes that prohibit toxins from entering the interstitial walls. If the lining is compromised and toxins are allowed to enter and damage the nerve endings, interstitial cystitis and it's painful symptoms are the result. Even though IC cannot be cured, removing irritating foods from your diet and taking supplements may relieve some of the symptoms.
Uva Ursi
Uva ursi works as a diuretic and an antiseptic. Native Americans used uva ursi as a remedy for irritation and inflammation associated with urinary tract problems. Nephritis, cystitis and urethritis are a few of the conditions that uva ursi was used for. Uva ursi can be taken in capsule, tea or tincture form, depending on the age of the person. It's best not to use uva ursi for long periods of time or in doses higher than what is recommended. Excessive amounts of the herb can cause irritation to the bladder and mucus membranes of the urinary tract.
Cornsilk
Cornsilk is mainly used in tea form and is known for its benefits as a diuretic. It offers a rich supply of potassium to offset the amount that is lost due to increased urination. Cornsilk is recommended for various kidney, bladder and urinary tract disorders. The stigmas of the female flowers of the corn plant are what is known as cornsilk. They are harvested from the plant immediately after the corn tassels appear.
Marshmallow Root
Marshmallow root relieves irritation and acts as an anti-inflammatory. It also works to stimulate the immune system. Marshmallow helps the body to rid itself of excess fluid and mucus. It soothes irritation and reduces inflammation in the bladder. Marshmallow root can be found in capsule, powder, tea and as an extract.
Gotu Kola
Gotu kola strengthens the connective tissue in the bladder by increasing the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAG). GAGs are a vital part of the protective lining of the bladder. Keeping the mucus membrane that lines the bladder strong and healthy prohibits toxins from entering and disrupting the sensitive nerve cells. Gotu kola is best taken in capsule form.
Buchu
Buchu can be taken in capsule form or consumed as a tea. It can also be used as a tincure. Buchu acts as a diuretic and soothes the kidneys and bladder. It flushes the urinary tract, removing excess fluid and mucus.
