The adrenal glands help our bodies to adapt to stress and respond to crises. They produce stress hormones and epinephrine in order to accomplish this function. To support the function of the adrenals, supplements that help the body moderate stress or directly support the adrenal glands can be used.
Foods for the Adrenals
The adrenals are naturally rich in vitamin C and are responsive to the general stress levels of the body. The best foods for the adrenal glands are those that are naturally rich in vitamin C and flavanoids as well as foods that reduce the overall stress on the body. These foods include fruits and vegetables, especially highly colored berries and green vegetables.
Herbs for the Adrenals
Adrenal herbs can be classified as either adaptogens, which are herbs that help the body adapt to stresses, and herbs such as acerola or rose hips that are high in antioxidants, especially vitamin C. Common adaptogens include ginseng, ashwaganda, rhodiolla, schizandra, Echinacea and ginger.
The particular adaptogen that best fits an individual depends on many factors including the constitutional state of the person, his or her familial heritage, the types of stress he or she is under and the environment.
Other Adrenal Supplements
Although no supplement should take the place of a balanced diet and stress reduction activities such as exercise and meditation; adrenal extract, DHEA, vitamin C, vitamin B complex and essential fatty acids are all helpful to the normal function of the adrenal glands.
