Adoptions are expensive, whether a family adopts domestically or abroad. Saving the money for legal fees and filing paperwork can amount to thousands of dollars. Saving that money can be difficult, especially in tough economic times, but fund raising events are a great way to generate funds to help with many adoptions expenses. Ideas for fundraisers are only limited by the imagination, and can be fun, silly or serious in nature.

Fill Baby Bottles

Distribute empty baby bottles to church members, friends, social clubs, area restaurants (after gaining permission of course) or other area businesses asking for donations. Baby bottles are a great way to collect spare change that can add up fast. Don't forget to attach a note or flyer to the baby bottle telling people what the donations are for.

Business Deals

Ask your boss if you can hold a raffle or some other event at your work place. Some people like to have a casual dress day, where people who want to participate can donate a certain amount (such as $5) for the chance to wear jeans or other old clothes to work, or win some sort of prize such as a dinner at a local restaurant.

Sell, Sell, Sell

Sell items on online auction sites like eBay or Yahoo auctions to earn extra funds. Collectibles like baseball cards or items like First Edition Star Wars toys, Barbie dolls and other items that have sat in closets or attics for years can raise funds to help with adoption costs. Clothes, movies, music and books in good to excellent condition can be sold for small listing fees. After paying shipping costs, profits can be placed in the adoption fund.

Artsy Ideas

If you're good at face-painting, offer to paint faces on a Saturday morning at your local park for a minimal donation. Hold a sidewalk chalk drawing event in your community, charging a small fee for budding artists in the community to strut their stuff. If you're into crafting, create soaps, candies or knit or crocheted caps or scarves and pocket the profits to go toward legal expenses as well.

Garage Sales

Garage sales are a perennial favorite in neighborhoods around the country. Enlist the help and donations of neighbors and friends and place fliers around town announcing a block party garage sale to raise funds for an adoption. Donate items in good condition and the bargain hunters will come.

Recycle

Many of us throw spare change into a can or container or our glove boxes. Dig out that change and redeem it for cash. Save plastic bottles, newspapers and other items and take them to your local recycling center for cash. You may be amazed at how much your trash might be worth. You can also join in efforts to recycle empty printer ink cartridges or old cell phones, as well as computer parts.
