Acne scarring is characterized by the appearance of discolorations, which are commonly more thick and dry than the surrounding skin. When your face contains acne scars, it can cause your complexion to look blotchy and unevenly toned. Luckily, there are a few ways to help diminish the scarring caused by acne.
Olive Oil Soak
Olive oil is a non-pore-clogging oil that can soften scar tissue, and can help it to be removed more easily. To soften your skin with olive oil, pour 1 tsp. of olive oil into your hands and smooth it onto your skin. Massage the oil around your face using your fingers, focusing on the areas of your face that contain the most acne scarring. After a few minutes, fill a bowl with nearly boiling water, and lean 18 inches over the bowl. Cover your head with a towel, which will force the steam from the water to billow over your face, further softening the skin. After five to ten minutes, lift your head from the bowl and wipe off the oil using a wet washcloth. An olive oil soak can be applied to your skin up to three times per week to soften acne scars.
Baking Soda Scrub
Baking soda is an alkaline substance that can be applied to your skin to buff away the dead scar tissue that has been softened by the olive oil soak. Baking soda contains smooth particulates, making it a gentle exfoliant that will not irritate or inflame your skin. To use baking soda as a scrub, mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water to form a loose paste. Massage the baking soda paste onto your skin for one to two minutes, then rinse with warm water. Use baking soda to scrub off softened acne scar tissue up to three times per week.
Lemon Juice Toner
Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which helps improve skin cell turnover and increases the development of new skin cells. Applying lemon juice regularly allows your skin to become more evenly toned faster than it normally would. To apply lemon juice to your skin, soak five cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, and place the pads onto your skin; one for your chin, one for each of your cheeks, and two for your forehead. After 10 minutes, remove the pads and allow your skin to air dry. Use lemon juice to help rebuild skin cells up to three times per day.
