You can spend up to an hour or more waiting in line at a bank to open a new checking account. Parking fees can also be a problem and hassle. There's also a chance that you might forget the necessary documents or identification cards needed to open a checking account. Luckily, most major banks nowadays offer online checking accounts which you can easily apply for at the comfort of your own home.
Step 1
Choose and compare banks that offer online checking accounts. There are innumerable banks in the United States that offer this type of checking account. The most popular banks include Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank and Capital One. Go to their websites and compare the type of online checking accounts they offer. Make sure you fully understand all of the fees, conditions and terms associated with the online checking account you choose.
Step 2
Gather the documents and information you need in order to open an online checking account. You will need your state driver's license, social security number and work history.
Step 3
Fill out the bank's online form in order to open an online checking account. Enter your full name, address, phone number, e-mail address, work history, occupation and source of income, date of birth and citizenship status.
Step 4
Deposit funds into your new online checking account. You can either use your credit card or mail in a check or money order. It will take about 5-6 business days to process your new account if you do decide to mail in a money order or check. Using a credit card is faster and preferred.
Step 5
Print out and mail back the confirmation form. Some banks require you send them a confirmation form with a written signature on it. Once they receive this form your account will be activated in 24 hrs after receipt of the signed form.
