Formula
A lip stain is an alternative to a standard lipstick. Whereas lipstick contains a wax-based form that adheres to the lips, lip stain does not contain wax. Instead, many lip stains begin with a water or gel base that can be purchased or made into a variety of forms, including a brush-on stain (which resembles nail polish), marker, gel or lip stain pot. Lip stains also contain dyes and may have some form of alcohol.
Application
A lip stain often is applied in a liquid form, and then the stain is allowed to dry on the lips. It is a good idea to exfoliate the lips prior to application because a stain is most evenly applied when the lips are free of dead skin cells. When applied via brush, applicator or fingers, the stain works to penetrate the lips, which temporarily dyes the lips. The stain usually dries quickly, but may require several applications in order for the color to fully develop. Because the lip stain does not use a wax, the lip stain may make the lips feel as if no product has been applied.
When the stain is dry, it appears matte or flat in color. For this reason, some lip stains also are accompanied by a lip gloss or other lip product to produce shine.
Wear
Lip stain usually lasts longer than regular lipstick because of its water-resistant properties, which means it doesn't have to be re-applied as often as regular lipstick. It will stay on for hours at a time. Lip stains are also are considered less transferable than other forms of lipstick. Because they are stained to the lips, they are advertised as not coming off on clothing, a drinking glass or even when giving a person a kiss. This is due in large part to the alcohol ingredient contained within the lip stain, as this helps to bond the lip stain to the lips.
