How to Learn Self-Confidence

If you have all kinds of negative thoughts going on, and you lack confidence in yourself, it's time for some changes. Learning self-confidence may seem impossible, but the truth is there are plenty of ways to help you have more confidence in your abilities by pushing out the negative and bringing in the positive. When bad things happen---problems at work, in the home, money troubles---it's easy to let negativity consume you. The key to learning how to gain self-confidence, however, starts with the mind: The way you think can make you happier and healthier.

Step 1

Make a list of your accomplishments and strengths. Think about anything you're proud that you have done. Visualize those goals and how happy you felt when you successfully achieved them. Then set new goals, and be specific. The more focused you are on what you want to do, the likelier you are to get there.

Step 2

Do what you love. Follow your passion. When you do this, you will develop a tremendous confidence skill---enthusiasm. Confidence is being certain that you can accomplish something the way you planned. And when you do, in turn, you will feel enthusiastic because you enjoy doing the things you do well. The balance of confidence and enthusiasm leads to a more positive attitude, which is essential to your personal and professional success.

Step 3

Listen to motivational tapes, upbeat music and CDs of positive affirmations. One example is, "I am happy; I love my life; I am strong; I can do anything; nothing is impossible; I can make my dreams come true." Repeat this whenever you feel your self-confidence slipping. This will give you strength to let go of fears and also believe in yourself.

Step 4

Eat well to improve not only your energy level, but also your self-image. Avoid any foods with a significant amount of fat. Some foods you eat slow you down. Include more vegetables and fruits in your food plan. The better you eat, the better your thoughts will be. Exercise for at least 20 minutes a day. When you feel better physically, you feel better mentally as well.

Step 5

Practice deep breathing exercises and putting positive images into your mind. Choose a quiet spot and sit comfortably. Meditate for about 30 minutes. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Breathe in slowly, imagining you're inhaling positive feelings.
