Colon Cancer Alarm Symptoms

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with roughly 450,000 new cases each year. In the United States alone, there are roughly 100,000 new cases of colon cancer every year, according to the book "Clinical Oncology." Colon cancer is really insidious in its development. As a result, regular screening for colon cancer is very important for early detection of colon cancer.

Rectal bleeding

The most common symptom of colon cancer is rectal bleeding. Rectal bleeding occurs in 58 percent of patients who developed colon cancer, according to a 1999 study published in the "American Journal of Gastroenterology."
However, rectal bleeding is very common among the apparently well general population. According to a 2004 review published in the journal "Family Practice," up to 15 percent of the general population has had rectal bleeding. Among those who have had rectal bleeding, only 3 percent have colon cancer. However, if rectal bleeding occurs frequently, you should consult with your physician about test for colorectal cancer.

Change in Bowel Habit

Change in bowel habit (such as constipation or diarrhea) is another common symptom of colon cancer, occurring in 51 percent of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, according to a study published in the "American Journal of Gastroenterology."
Change in bowel habit is a more common symptom of cancer in the elderly, according to the review published in "Family Practice."
If either constipation or diarrhea occurs frequently, you should consult your physician on testing for colon cancer.

Other Symptoms

Other symptoms of colon cancer include weight loss, anemia, fatigue and occult blooding, according to the review published in "Family Practice."
Weight loss is more common in advanced colon cancer. Anemia and fatigue are often associated with colon cancer in the right side of the colon, according to the book "Clinical Oncology."
