Home Remedy for Treating Lice

Lice are tiny parasites that feed on human blood. They spread easily through close contact and through shared objects, like hats, combs or clothing. According to the Mayo Clinic, head lice impact the scalp, neck and skin over the ears. Pubic lice, also called crabs, inhabit the skin and hair of the pubic area or the eyelashes. You can treat lice at home but it is important to be diligent to prevent the recurrence of the parasites.

Step 1

Apply an over-the-counter (OTC) lice shampoo or lotion to the body, according to the directions. Most products require a generous amount massaged into the skin or scalp. Shampoo the hair a second time during the initial treatment. Then, use the shampoo or lotion again in seven to 10 days, or as the package directs. These directions can also be used for the treatment of pubic lice, as long as the package does not state differently.

Step 2

Saturate the hair with vinegar. Let it set for three to five minutes before combing. Using a special "nit pick" usually included with the shampoo or lotion, or a fine-toothed comb, remove nits or lice eggs. The eggs often attach to the root of the hair. Comb through every section of the hair.

Step 3

Towel dry the area. Repeat these steps every three to four days for at least two weeks, advises the Mayo Clinic.

Step 4

Wash all bedding, clothes, toys, hats and any other material items that have been in contact with the lice-infested person(s). The Mayo Clinic suggests hot soapy water at temperatures at or above 130 degrees F and high heat to dry for at least 20 minutes.

Step 5

Place all items that cannot be washed in an airtight bag and seal it for two weeks. Wash combs and brushes by soaking them in very hot, soapy water.

Step 6

Cover furniture that will be used while lice treatment is ongoing with a painter's drop cloth.

Tips and Warnings

  • Vacuum the house frequently during lice treatment. Avoid contact with others in the home and outside the home to prevent the spread of the parasite. Try treating the scalp with mayonnaise, olive oil, margarine or petroleum jelly overnight to smother the lice. Follow up in the morning with a vinegar rinse and a thorough combing. This method is not as effective as commercial products, but it is safe for use on young children who cannot use such products.
  • Over-the-counter products are not recommended for children under 2. Use vinegar and a fine-toothed comb to remove nits and prevent the spread of the lice by following the preventative steps.
