Depression can affect children, teenagers and adults. It's normal to feel sad every once in a while, but if you're plagued with feelings of sadness on a regular basis, you may be depressed.

Basics

Symptoms of depression affect people occupationally and socially. Someone might lose her job and have a hard time maintaining relationships.

Types

Each type of depression has its own symptoms. For example, dysthymic disorder is characterized by a period of at least two years of mild symptoms of depression. Seasonal affective disorder usually occurs in the winter.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of depression include feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, fatigue, sleeping and eating issues, irritability, sadness and difficulty concentrating.

Treatment

Depression symptoms can be treated with a combination of therapy, support groups and medication. Consult your doctor or therapist to determine a specific treatment plan.

Warning

Suicidal thoughts are symptomatic of deep depression. If a person's depression is not treated, he may consider suicide.
