How to Use Fentanyl

Fentanyl, marketed under the brand name Duragesic, is a pain patch. The patch provides a continual dose of pain medication for individuals suffering from chronic and persistent pain. Fentanyl is a narcotic, and the patch treats people who have a tolerance to other pain medications, but still have severe pain. After placement on the skin, the patch provides medication for three days. According to MedlinePlus, the medication in the patch may be habit forming and should not be used in children under the age of 2.

Step 1

Obtain a prescription for a fentanyl patch for severe pain that is not relieved with other medications or treatment.

Step 2

Step 3

Wash the application site with water and dry thoroughly.

Step 4

Remove the patch from the package, beign careful to not damage it. Cutting or tearing the patch may alter the dose of medication delivered.

Step 5

Remove the plastic film covering the adhesive side of the patch and apply the patch to the skin.

Step 6

Hold the patch to the skin for 30 seconds to form a good seal.

Step 7

Wash hands with soap and water.

Step 8

Monitor the patch periodically be make sure it is securely attached to the skin. Use medical tape to help the sides stick, if necessary.

Step 9

Wait three days and remove the patch. Discard the used patch.

Step 10

Apply a new patch to another location on the body.
